The 1900’s Comes to Life in Miniature: The Great American Dollhouse Museum
The Great American Dollhouse Museum, located in Danville, Kentucky, describes itself as ‘a study in social history.’
And indeed it is. As you peruse through its intricately-crafted miniature of an American village in the 1900’s, it is not just the detailed houses and furniture that will arrest your attention. What jumps at you is life. Their collection captures the effervescence of a bustling community, and their characters will leave you wondering about their stories.
People from all walks of life can be found in their mini-town and they are all kinetic. Some are working; others are at their houses tending to their families. Kids are playing with the animals. Some appear to be even engaged in intriguing interactions! One is recommended to look at each setting more than once, as there are many hidden gems embedded in the exhibit.
Attention is given to illustrate these citizens’ feelings and emotions, as well as their modes of doing things and standards of living. Even the characters attire and food communicate about their culture. And as you immerse yourself in the craftsmanship, you get a sense of what it must have been like for people at that time. The vivid social structure just jumps at you.
The settings are varied and colorful, and all houses are open at the back so that their great details may be fully appreciated. More so, the houses are arranged in a continuous display, rather than discrete glass cases, giving it that added community feel. From a Shaker settlement to a Grand Hotel to a Wild Western town, the collection has great variety and guarantees to captivate. There is even an enchanted forest filled with gnomes, witches and fairies outside of town. And for the true dollhouse enthusiast, the Great American Dollhouse Museum boasts of several lawbres — considered as the royalty of custom dollhouses.
The dollhouse collection is already well-worth a visit but this museum, launched in October 2008, and still has more to offer its patrons. For one, the museum itself is a historical gem. It rests on a 6,000 square foot building built in 1939 by the Works Progress Administration. Its high ceilings and iron girders add to the ambience of the place, making it an ideal place for learning and evoking creativity.
The Great American Dollhouse Museum also offers the added facilities of a playroom where kids can play with a dollhouse village all they want. There is also a multi-purpose, classroom-type room that is envisioned to be a venue for a variety of hands-on workshops on miniaturism, such as doll making and decorating, as well as a lunchroom for visiting students. And if something in you gets triggered to start a dollhouse collection yourself, their gift shop has starter kits available to nudge you in the right direction.
The staff exerted the effort to have something for patrons of every age. And the collection is constantly being updated in order to have something new to offer returnees. If you wish to learn more about The Great American Dollhouse Museum, you may visit their site www.thedollhousemuseum.com.
